Some stories change completely depending on who gets to tell them.

Medusa is remembered as a monster. A woman with snakes for hair, a deadly stare and enough rage to turn men into stone.

But behind the monster is a story about violence, punishment and blame.

In one of the most famous versions of the myth, Medusa is assaulted by Poseidon and transformed by Athena. Her beauty becomes something frightening. Her hair becomes snakes. Her gaze becomes a weapon. What looks like a curse can also be read as the power to make sure no one can hurt her in the same way again.

And somehow, she is still the monster of the story.

This original Vandalized illustration reclaims Medusa as a symbol of female rage, survival and the refusal to carry someone else’s shame.

Maybe the problem was never that people were afraid to look Medusa in the eyes.

Maybe they were afraid she would look back.
